Form and Key Players
Leicester had a challenging run to the final, and they have recorded some impressive results. Brendan Rodgers’ side beat Stoke 4-0 and Brentford 3-1 in the earlier rounds. They then defeated three Premier League rivals in the latter stages of the competition. A narrow 1-0 over Brighton was followed by a dominant 3-1 win against Man United and a 1-0 semi-final victory over Southampton.
With 12 goals in five FA Cup matches, Leicester will be full of confidence coming into the final. The Foxes have also been in good Premier League form this season. They are still in the hunt for the top four, have only lost four of their last 18 matches and are one of the highest scorers in the Premier League, with 55 goals in 31 matches.
Kelechi Iheanacho has been Leicester’s star player in the FA Cup. The Nigerian striker is the joint top scorer in the competition with four goals. Iheanacho also scored two against United in the quarter-finals and netted the winner against Southampton in the semis. Jamie Vardy is a player for the big games and has 12 goals this season. Youri Tielimens has also been in good recent form and has scored two and assisted two of Leicester’s 12 FA Cup goals.
Chelsea sailed past Morecambe and Luton in the first two rounds of the 2020/21 FA Cup, then defeated Barnsley 1-0 in round five. Two wins over Premier League opposition followed as Chelsea beat Sheffield United 2-0 and Man City 1-0 in the semi-finals.
The West London side has been impressive in the second half of the season. They remain in the chase for the top four in the Premier League and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last week. Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as Chelsea manager in January, and the Blues have lost just two matches out of 20 and kept 16 clean sheets under the German coach.
Mason Mount has been a stand out player this season for Chelsea. The English midfielder has been pulling the strings for the Blues and is the joint top-scorer at the club with six goals. Under Tuchel, Chelsea’s solid defence has been a cornerstone of their success. Defenders Kurt Zouma, Antonio Rudiger, Thiago Silva and wing backs Ben Chilwell and Reece James have been influential in Chelsea’s turn around in the second half of the season.
Leicester have a strong recent record against Chelsea and have lost just once to the Blues in their last six meetings.
However, the Foxes have never beaten Chelsea in six previous FA Cup matches. The Blues also beat Leicester 1-0 in the quarter-finals in last season’s competition.
Chelsea come into the 2020/21 FA Cup final as favourites. But they are still competing in three competitions, and their fixture pile-up towards the end of the season could play into Leicester’s hands. This coupled with Chelsea drawing domestically against Brighton makes their chances of finishing inside the top four of the Premier League this season increasingly difficult, so their best shot at silverware this season may be to field their best squad and aim for cup glory against Leicester.
