Why Football is a Numbers Game

You don’t often associate football with mathematics, but the two go hand in hand closer than you might think. Football is very much a numbers game, and those who want to know more about the intricacies of the game need to get to grips with the numbers behind it! Here are three key areas of numbers that you need to know about if you want to follow the world of football closely.

Aggregate

When you listen to any sort of football punditry, you are likely to hear the presenters discussing aggregate scores. This is a key part of many different leagues, and helps to determine points for championships and tournaments. It is the combined goals of two teams over several games.

In a tournament, it is not uncommon for two teams to face each other at home and away. The aggregate score is therefore the total score of the times that they have faced each other. This is best illustrated with an example – so let’s invent a scenario between Chelsea and Everton. They will play two games at each other, one at Stamford Bridge and one at Goodison Park. Chelsea took the first match 2-1 while Everton won the second 1-0, so the overall aggregate score for both clashes would be 2-2 over both games.

Odds

Of course, anyone who wants to get involved with the world of football at a deeper level should take a look at odds. These are an excellent place to find out who the winner of a match will be. How do betting odds work? It is simpler than you might think, you just need to know how to read the notation.

Most odds in football will indicate a favourite to win and an underdog. Learning how to read odds will help you to understand who the experts think is going to come out on top. However, this is not a certainty, which is one of the best and most beautiful things about football!

Player Rankings

There are so many statistics that can be attached to a player. From the number of goals that they score to their pass accuracy or even just the number of times that they are capped, these are all important metrics that can be used to determine the success of a player.

In turn, these statistics can be used to work out their value, potentially raising their chances of getting transferred to a new club or entering a football Hall of Fame. Just take a look at some of the statistics of the best players of all time and you will certainly see some impressive numbers there!

There is no denying it, numbers run through the heart of football. If you want to understand the game at a deeper level, you need to make sure that you take a look at the numbers. It might not always be the most exciting part of football, but you can really learn a lot by choosing to take a look at some of the stats behind the game.
